The capybara is a giant cavy rodent native to South America. It is the largest living rodent. Also called capivara, capiguara, chigüire, chigüiro, or fercho, carpincho and ronsoco, it is a member of the genus Hydrochoerus, of which the only other extant member is the lesser capybara (Hydrochoerus isthmius).

Capybaras are from about 39 to 51 inches (100 to 130 centimeters) long and about 20 inches (50 cm) tall from foot to shoulder. They tend to weigh 60 to 174 lbs. (27 to 79 kilograms), depending on gender.

Capybaras are are believed to be the friendliest wild animals on Earth.

Other animals love capybaras so much because of their peaceful and relaxed nature. Their laidback lifestyle seems to attract every animal to hang out with them. Even crocodiles! If it doesn't hurt them, Capybaras don't really care what other animals are doing around them.

While the capybara is a generally calm and social animal, they are still wild animals. A capybara that feels scared or nervous can bite and behave aggressively. This can be a real concern as their teeth are large and very sharp.

Their average life expectancy is 8-10 years.

What do Capybaras eat?

Capybaras are herbivores, they use their long, sharp teeth for grazing on grass and water plants. An adult capy can eat 6 to 8 pounds (2.7 to 3.6 kilograms) of grass per day! During the dry season, when fresh grasses and water plants dry up, capybaras eat reeds, grains, melons, and squashes.

They also eat their own feces in the morning. That’s when their poo is protein rich from the high number of microbes digesting the previous day’s meals. 

Where are Capybaras found?

Capybaras are found in Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Northeast Argentina and Uruguay. They are semi-aquatic and will spend most of their time in dense vegetation around rivers, lakes, ponds, marshes and swamps.

Are they edible?

Capybara are native to South America, where the meat is considered a delicacy. Salt-cured capybara is consumed during Lent in Venezuela, where the popularity of the dish prompted the Vatican to declare that capybara isn't meat but fish.
